Whatever You Grow Up To Be was a very sweet book to read. It is basically a mother telling a story of how she will always be at her sons side; no matter what he chooses to be when he gets older. Karen Kingsbury uses rhyming to capture her audiences attention. The story begins with the young boy being a baby and learning new things while his mother is at his side, "You wiggle, giggle, start to crawl, take baby steps, and then you fall. You try again, I hold your hand, then on your own you learn to stand." The story goes on and talks about how the boy will grow and try new things, and his mother will always be there to support whatever he chooses to be. Towards the end of the story the mother talks about how one day he will get married and have a baby of his own. One can tell that the author of this book is religious because of the proverbs she puts on some of the pages, all relative to children and parents. I think this is a special book for both parents and children because it talks about how your parents will always be there for you; the book also shows parents that your children are growing up and one day you will have to let go, this best thing to do is help them into that journey of adulthood. This book tares at the heart a bit as it starts off with the boy (who is the main character) as a young infant and his mother sitting by his side, with a simple phrase of, "...making footprints on his mommy's heart". Each page shows images of how the boy grown from stage to stage in his young life. These images are filled with how the boy dresses up in many characters and how the mom and dad will always support what ever stage he is in and with whatever he chooses to be when he grows up. Each page is supported by a bible verse that relates to the image on the page. The genre in this book in non-fiction. The media in the book is pastels.
