San Francisco's Seacliff neighborhood is known for its mansions and sweeping ocean views... But when a young woman dies after attending a raucous party at one of the most prestigious properties on the block, the moneyed facade begins to crack. Senior Detective Mick Downey is a newcomer to San Francisco, struggling to find his way in the city of love. He's not sure what to make of the constant fog and the New Age poppycock spouting from his partner, but one thing he knows for sure is that something terrible happened the night of the party. Soon it is up to Mick to find the truth that everyone else wants to ignore, even if it exposes some uncomfortable truths that the killer would prefer to keep hidden. I think, however, it was rushed to publication and the author would do well to have it properly edited. There are some irritating plot errors (Mick meets one of the characters "for the first time" twice, for example), and the latter half of the book has some typos that a good proofreading should rectify, plus the plot loses some of its credibility in the second half. I have no objection to opening a book with a secondary character's POV, but was led to expect "Cass" to have a more prominent role.
All in all, however, I enjoyed reading this book and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone looking for a new mystery series. ( )
