Anthology 2001 is a collection of Children's literature, non-fiction, fiction, screenplays and poetry from the Writers of Kern, a division of the California Writers Club. The authors are residents of Kern County in the southern San Joaquin Valley. Gentle literature from a hard geography, this collection has an array of characters both nostalgic and crusty, most with generous hearts and a touch of humor, emotions sometimes unrecognized in themselves until fate intervenes. Subjects range from glider pilots flying with eagles; a fishy tale about friendship between an earthworm and a fisherman; the exploits of dogs named Digger and Killer; how frybread and hospitality can bridge racial barriers; the unexpected rescue of an abused mother and child by an aging hermit; the bigger than life laugh of Bertie the waitress; and the many favors of love, loss, and opportunity missed. The writing styles are primarily straight-forward, more journalistic than ornate, with the exception of some of the poems, which intensify with imagery. Overall, the voices of Anthology 2001 make an ideal read to accompany a quiet cup of coffee on a Sunday. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
