Still loved the relationship between Vee and Kenna—and that they're the ones to save the day—and since I am still entirely unimpressed with Vee's love interest, I appreciated that this volume of the series focused mostly on Kenna's romance with Duncan.

But...there were so many loose threads to the plot, to the world-building, to the characters. And since the overall conflict possessed neither teeth nor originality, I had little else to do but catalog the narrative holes and dead-ends. And the typos! So. Many. Typos. All of that paired with the needless cliffhanger ending put me in mind more of an amateur e-book than a professionally published novel. ( )

More often than not the sequel is worse than the first book, and unfortunately Destined for Doon by Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon is testament of this. Instead of taking previous critiques into account, the authors decided to continue with their initial plan by adding on to their immature characters and upping the amount of useless references to plays that doesn't do much for the plot other than add words. Veronica, now queen of the Doon, has no personality whatsoever anymore and frankly I found her dull queenly routine and power struggle with Jamie (the ex-king of Doon) tiring. As for MacKenna ... at one point I wished the witch would come back and kill her, because God knows that girl can whine, not to mention she can't make up her mind, and it's truly a futile technique of word-adding. Duncan can do so much better!

Destined for Doon was a disaster. Again, the time inconsistencies annoyed me, not to mention the general feel of the book. I mean, at the end of Doon, every bloody Doonian was cheering for their new queen, and now there's unrest. It's been two and a half months in Doon, surely they didn't expect an American teenager with shit for brains to suddenly know how to run a freaking kingdom?!

The tropes, metaphors, similes and colloquialisms also got under my skin. I mean, isn't authors supposed to learn out of their mistakes through critique? Surely I'm not the first one to bring up these problems with the books?

All in all, if you're looking for something set in Scotland - after your Outlander binge - this is not the series you want to get into. It'll just piss you off. Sorry, but it's true.

The word "zombies" first appeared on page 29, and my desire to read this book pretty much ended right there. Then it turned into "zombie fungus" instead of real zombies, so I kept reading. However, between the zombie fungus and one of my students needing to read this, I pretty much skimmed a lot of the book and then read the end, which is a huge cliffhanger. I wish the authors had just ended the last book with everyone having their happily ever after and not felt the need to turn it into a series. I still liked the characters and the concept of Doon, but this one really didn't do much for me. ( )

I have not read the first book in this series, Doon. I got a chance to review the second book, Destined for Doon and even though I have not read the first book, I could not pass up the chance to see what this series was all about. So glad that I did. I had no problems jumping right into this book. The magical world of Doon was great. I have a wish to some day visit Ireland and Scotland so this book was right up my alley.

Despite having not read the first book I still felt the strong connection between Kenna and Duncan. Also, the feelings with Veronica and Jamie. The world that the authors built of Doon was great. I instantly was transported to this world. Another thing that I liked was that Veronica was still a normal girl even though she was queen. She was relatable. Actually all of the characters were relatable. The ending has left me in a cliff hanger and I can't wait to read book three. For now, I will just have to go back and read book one. ( )
