I read a lot of YA fiction, and I'm not a YA, so I may get some of the youth's memery wrong in this review.

Alba: Everybody wants to move away from my Australian country town, but I'd be happy to just stay!
Me, who grew up gay in a country town: Mmmmmmmmmmmmm can't relate.

Alba: And all that yummy boy abs, you know?
Me: Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

And it's weird, because I really liked Alba, and I was really rooting for her? But I just could not relate to her at all as a character. I really enjoyed a lot of things about this book and I'm going to go check out others, so I'm hoping that that is just a blip in Melissa Keil's books, because of the mood I'm in or because of the way her character was written. I guess we'll find out. ( )

A super quirky book. I think it's important to know that not much really happens in this book. What kept me reading was the oddly charming characters. I listened to this as an audio and I think that was a good choice as I probably would have dnf'd the physical copy. Slow to get going but I smiled through the entire last hour.

I totally recommend Life in Outer Space by the same author as a thoroughly enjoyable book. ( )

Very definitely worth the (very long) wait to see this available in an American market. A quirky, truthful tale of love and growing up (not to mention potential apocalypses)...but also the struggles of growing into the artist one wants, and fears, to be. ( )
