The book Birthday Presents by Cynthia Rylant was not the most exciting book I have ever read. I liked this book because it was an easy read however, I personally do not think it would be very intriguing for young children. One reason I do not think it would grasp a young reader’s attention would be because there is no big issue or purpose. The book just goes on to tell about each of the young girls birthdays from birth to five years old. This can be boring because there is no big climax of the story. This book, however, had fun pictures that I am sure children can relate to. There were pictures of the little girl eating cake with friends, having the flu, and playing outside in the book. On the other hand, there were cartoon pictures of a naked baby. I do not think it is appropriate to have that in a young children’s book. Overall, I believe that this book needed a little more information or depth to grab the readers attention. ( )

This is a story of a little girl and her parents making birthday memories. The book talks about her 1st birthday through her 6th birthday. Her parents made her a birthday cake each year. The book show how the little matured through each birthday and eventually helped bake cakes for her parents birthday. ( )

Cynthia Rylant describes the first five birthdays of a little girl. The story is sweet and the pictures are colorful and fun. This would be a fun read-a-loud, especially for someone's birthday. ( )
