It’s been a while since I read the previous book in this series, but it all came back pretty quickly. Where Detective Tucker was the focus of book seven, it is now his partner Kevin’s turn to figure out the truth about the strange goings-on in the new “family” Tucker has discovered. This is the story of Kevin’s struggle not just with accepting the supernatural is real (a very tough task for a fact-based detective), but also about his true nature as a man who likes to give up control in the bedroom. And the latter, let me tell you, is the harder battle by far.

Kevin is as headstrong as Tucker was before he got “assimilated” by the pack, and all the talk about Tucker wanting to be exactly where he is, with his newly discovered family, cannot convince Kevin that his partner and friend knows what he is doing. Surely, Kevin thinks, they have brainwashed him, and it’ll turn out they’re some weird cult. Of course he tracks Tucker down and attempts to free him. What he finds, eventually, is a shock to his system. And not just because they are wolf shifters, but because he is incredibly attracted to one of them even though he is a Dom and makes Kevin like things he doesn’t want to enjoy.

Richard is certain he can never have another bloodmate; he almost died from grief when his first one died many years ago. But he cannot deny the pull he feels coming from Kevin, and proceeds to make him understand they are meant to be together. Richard is even more stubborn than Tucker’s new mate, and stricter in what he will and won’t accept from Kevin. The two are very hot together, and Richard gives Kevin exactly as much “rough” as the detective needs – even if Kevin won’t admit it until I had almost given up hope for those two.

If you like a bit of mystery and a lot of struggle with your romance, if you enjoy reading about a stubborn man who prefers facts but has to come to terms with the fact that werewolves are real, and if you're looking for another story about the Dark Hollow wolf pack, then you will probably like this novella.
