This is a biography about Mae Jemison that is told at an accessible reading level. One thing I appreciate about this book is the multiple examples of non-fiction text features. It has a table of contents, headings, maps, bold words, fact boxes, photographs with captions, a timeline, a glossary, an index, a web address for more information, and an about the author info box. Also, it has a poem about Mae Jemison as well as a bullet-point list for steps to take to be a scientist (be curious, work hard, etc.) It's not always easy to find easy readers that also have such defined NF text features. For such a short book, it was packed with relevant information. I really liked the message Mae Jemison provides us. She had so many things which could have caused her to rethink her future plans but she came out on top like nothing could touch her. Not once did she give up on her goals. I even liked that she accomplished so much and was always trying to help others become better. For example, she became a doctor, teacher, joined the peace corps, etc. When I look at her photographs I see power and a true leader. This book even includes fun facts that children would love. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
