4 "Change of Plans?" Stars for the story and 4.5 narration stars!

Please note this series must be read in chronological order, and the below review contains spoilers for earlier books. If you haven't yet started this series, please see my review for Book 1, Aurora Sky.

In Hunting Season we are treated to a whirlwind of action between the hunted and the hunters. The only question is just who is being hunted as more secrets begin to be revealed about the secret, clandestine government agency that Aurora and her fellow vampire hunters and informants work for. But suspense is only one part of the equation in this UF young adult/new adult based romance as the love triangle and fight for Aurora's heart begins to unravel and Aurora's own heart driven motivations begin to be revealed.

Picking up where book 3 leaves off, at the beginning of Hunting Season we find Aurora trying to figure out how she is going to rescue Dante (who has been captured by Jared's former protege turned enemy, Giselle in an attempt to get Aurora to turn over Jared in exchange for Dante). Unfortunately for Aurora, the government agency she works for isn't as motivated in Dante's recovery as she is (even though he too is one of their agents). Instead Aurora's tasked with other assignments and left to also plot out her revenge on Jared (the "recruiter" from the agency who seems to have dubious motivations).

Fortunately for Aurora, and us(!), Fane is willing to help Aurora in her covert, double agent plans. As you can only imagine this close working together leads to further heating up and temptations regarding their already undeniable attraction. But Aurora is still technically dating Dante, and moreover is committed to rescuing him above all costs. Will Aurora be successful in her rescue and revenge attempts? And just who are Aurora's allies and enemies? Not to mention, who will Aurora choose to give her heart to: Dante or Fane?

Em Eldridge delivers another great performance in Hunting Season. Providing remarkable consistency in her character voices, Ms. Eldridge makes it so easy to settle back into the Aurora Sky series even after having listened to a number of other unrelated audiobooks in between. Additionally, Ms. Eldridge's attention to the mood of the scene and ability to impart emotion, makes listening to this tale a must.

The production quality is also fabulous in Hunting Season. Although this is an ACX produced title, you will feel like you're listening to an audiobook produced by one of the big audiobook producers.

All in all, I loved both the attention to the romance and suspense angle in Hunting Season, as well as the expert narration. This was one busy book with many different angles going on, so you will have to pay close attention to catch it all. However, if you do, you will find that it now truly feels like we are starting to get some inklings about the long-term direction of this series. Now I can't wait to continue with Book 5, Whiteout to find out if my suspicions pan out!

Review
I loved this installment in the Aurora Sky series.

Aurora can't seem to catch a break when it comes to the agency and her vampire friends. At every turn something blows up in her face. It's hard making plans with so many unknown variables out there. I did like getting to know more about Fane. His past was enlightening to the person he is now.

You can see the Aurora's growth throughout the series. Even when situations seem dire she manages to keep hope. Although, sometimes she's not sure she should. It's no secret that I'm a total Fane fangirl! I love him in this book the most. We get to see him more, and he's so sweet at times. I love his loyalty. Jared still gives me the heebie jeebies. I do not like him at all. And Valerie is still a bitch. I can't believe how heinous she is.

The ending makes me want the next book even more. So many things happen, and the future is definitely uncertain.
TEAM FANE FOREVER!

Hunting Season by Nikki Jefford is the fourth novel in the series called Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter. This book continues the story of Aurora Sky, a young female vampire hunter focused on rescuing her partner from a vampire who is holding him hostage to exchange him for a government employed vampire. Meanwhile, she continues to be sent on missions by the government agents to hunt vampires. Playing a careful game, where she isn’t entirely sure that she herself is not being manipulated, Aurora attempts to mount a rescue effort making unlikely alliances.

As in the previous books, the relationship between vampirism, fatal diseases, blood types, and vampire hunting is an interesting and unique take on vampires that I like.

Overall, I enjoyed this novel, probably the most in this series so far. The plot was exciting and to me the second half of the novel was especially engrossing because of the intriguing untrustworthy interplay between the characters. I also like how the history between the vampires was coming into play. Similarly, the mistrust and manipulation of the government agency and the vampire hunters and the vampires in this novel is really coming to a head after a slow build up throughout the series. The surprising reveal from the last novel drove some of the rekindling of the relationships in this one as well as the formation of new tentative alliances. I’m hoping as the story continues more will be revealed about these new alliances with vampires that could reveal more about the government agency and the history behind it.

The narration by Em Eldridge was good. I want to comment that her narration throughout the series has been consistent which is great! The production quality was good. I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes young adult fiction and vampire stories.

Hunting Season starts off where Bad Blood ends with Aurora on a personal mission to rescue Dante.

I could not put this book down. It was full of non-stop action and excitement.

To say Aurora has a lot on her plate is an understatement. Once again, it seems like her world has been turned upside-down. She ends up making new discoveries and realizations about herself and others. I like that she is a loyal friend. She acts on what she feels is the right thing to do. She is resilient and determined to live her life.

I’m glad Aurora and Noel made amends. Noel is an upright and dependable friend. I like how Noel’s character has transformed throughout the series. She has become stronger and more confident.

I was thrilled Aurora got Tommy back. Sorry for the spoiler but dog abduction is just plan evil. How could anyone want to harm a golden retriever of all dogs? They are so stinking cute. Alright, Tommy is tough for a golden; Dante did train him well, but still that’s just wrong.

I never know what to expect from Valerie. That girl is volatile. One minute you think there might be hope for her, the next she is doing something selfish and evil. She keeps the story interesting that is for sure.

I love Nikki Jefford’s writing style. Everything flows well and is easy to follow. She offers a little of everything: action, romance, mystery, vampires, paranormal, espionage, fantasy. She also, does it in a way that feels believable and authentic.

Hunting Season was another great book in the series. I’m really interested in seeing where the ending takes us. Just when things start to look they are going Aurora’s way, BAM! Something else happens to put a wrinkle in her life. I’m looking forward to Book 5, Whiteout.
