Description:

This is part of the popular LPN Threads series. This is esentially a study guide for the student nurse to learn medical-surgical and anatomy and physiology. This is such a comprehensive guide.

Highlights:

As this is a paperback and not an e-book, the reader can write all over this guide, as there are crosswords, fill in the blanks and to work through the multiple choice questions. It is a resource that the reader can revisit all through their training. It is pleasing to the eye and written in a style that the reader does not feel this is too much to retain.

The authors takes what could be a really hard and dry subject and makes this so meaningful to the student.

This continually is being revised and this 7th edition is uptodate.

Strengths and weaknesses:

An aspect of nursing in this day and age, right at the beginning of this text book, was additional study hints for students who use English as a second language. The authors advise that these students find a first-language buddy to help with word meanings. This also can enrich students whose first language is English to understand a little of their language.

The study guide is set out well, and is a resource that a student can pick up that is not too intense and work their way through chapters learning a great deal. Quite often terminology is used and how many people actually do not know the true meaning. This study guide ensures the student understands, and gives real scenarios in the multiple choice questions.

Although this is written in the states for students working towards the NCLEX examinations, this is apt for the students in the UK. So there are no real weaknesses.

This is a textbook that the reader can work through, with no cheating involved- the answers are not at the end of the chapters. This focuses the student to think and really work through this efficiently.

Potential Readers:

This is written for nursing students, but equally a newly qualified nurse would benefit from this resource to ensure they understand their patient. Personally I gained a great deal working through some of the chapters and thinking I did not appreciate that before or did I not really understand an aspect of cancer nursing so this enabled me to read more widely on the subject.
