Hero: Wolves of Angels Rest #1 (Mating Season Collection Book 3) by Elsa Jade, Mating Season Collection Maddie has had a thing for Kane since she moved to Angels Rest. Always watching him, but never approaching him. After all, he can have any girl he wants. In her senior year Kane asks her to a dance. They danced on the floor and then later they danced to a different tune, but Maddie knows that nothing lasting will happen. Not being able to handle the heartbreak, she leaves town and doesn't look back, until several years later. She has come back to Angels Rest. She has come back to heal and to see where things will go from here. Kane Villalobos is a werewolf. His kind has lived in the Angels Rest area for centuries. Living among humans, but always hiding their true selves. He has always wanted more then to hide, so he leaves Angels Rest looking for what isn't out there....Freedom to be who he is. He has served in military and traveled all over the place, but there were no werewolves living in the open...no hope of coming out...no hope of Freedom. So when his father dies he goes back home to become the Alpha he was raised to be. He must claim a mate to do that and he isn't looking forward to it. The only woman he wants, he can't have, so when she comes back to town, Kane has to fight his wolf to stay away from her. Yeah, that's working out really well. *ARC given for an honest review* geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Review
Kane Villalobos just returned to Angels Rest, Colorado after a ten year absence to take over the werewolf pack after his father died. As the new alpha, he must take a mate or lose his title and pack, and he must do it during the Mating Season which is happening now. He runs into his old high school crush outside a bar and things heat up between them.
Maddie Joplin returned to town not long before Kane did and she still feels like an outsider. She left town to find herself and to find a place to belong, but never did.
Kane joined the Army and left town to find other werewolves. He wants to live out in the open with humans but what he learned proved his father right. Shifters must stay hidden for their own protection.
Maddie and Kane reunite quickly and very sexually, but there’s tension between them. There’s definitely a lot of tension between Kane and his wolf cousins, Bastian and Rafael.
While I enjoyed this story and would’ve given it 4 stars, I’m dropping the rating down to 3 stars. There is a HEA but the book ended abruptly at 83% and to read the Epilogue, you have to sign up for the author’s newsletter. That makes no sense. There are lots of unanswered questions and loose ends (Maddie is waaaay too accepting of Kane after she sees him shift for the first time. She doesn’t understand she’s a seer or what it means; Kane never told her the real reason he broke her heart back when they were teenagers; the reader learns very little about Kane’s experiences in the Army and we don’t even know his rank.). All this might be explained in the epilogue but a book shouldn’t be sold with a stipulation to join a mailing list to get the entire story.
