As with TR, I appreciate Munroe relaying his tale in a way which doesn't pander, the reader needs to be patient and also be willing to piece together bits of information to understand what's going on. In this manner, the reader mirrors the experience of characters, who have piecemeal experiences of the Rapture without anyone providing explanations as to what happened, and how things work now. Even the narrative dump in the gas station fits with how people would talk to each other, avoiding the "As you know, Bob ..." crutch.
The dog appears to go through a change of breed between this and TR, perhaps due to different artists, because it's a different dog, or ... perhaps dogs also are subject to the new post-Rapture rules. (It becomes clear in TR that dogs are, in fact, potentially but not necessarily affected.) This would be sure to devastate the fundamentalists who appear to have survived the Rapture: animals typically are understood not to have souls?
