An objective look at the natural history and population of lion and cheetah in India by Valmik Thapar, the doyen of wildlife experts in India, and two others. I got this book principally in the context of the recent introduction of a few cheetahs in central India (Kuno forest), as it has been of the view of many wildlifers that it is a very questionable project with little chances of long-term success. Valmik seems to generally confirm that the cheetah (and perhaps also the lion) has been artificially maintained in medieval times by continuous imports from Africa, and was not a part of India's native fauna. Without stating it in so many words, he seems to be sceptical about the cheetah revival project in India. A useful book, with sizeable excerpts from old books and papers about the lion and the cheetah in India. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
