Are we talking something like this?

A princess is raised in seclusion because her entire purpose in life is to marry a neighboring prince or be sacrificed to a dragon in order to maintain the peace in her kingdom. She chooses to sacrifice herself to the dragon and the prince chooses to follow her because...there would be no book if he didn't? And then the whole thing gets boring and eye-roll-y. The princess employs dumb luck and necessity of plot to slay the dragon, thus taking on the dragon's "treasure", which is all of his knowledge, so now she has become Super Mary Sue. She knows how to fight and how to kiss and battle strategy and how to heal others with magic and anything that anyone eaten by the dragon would have known and it makes her really, really boring as a character. She's also gained the ability to gain the knowledge of anyone she kills and there's something about how she needs to consume fire to get warm/stay alive and I guess these things are supposed to make her layered and interesting and conflicted but, yeah, not so much. The plot itself, too, is boring and predictable and there are magical forest gypsies (But it's not racist if you don't call them gypsies, right?) and an ice dragon full of hate that, if slain, will pass its hate on to whomever kills it (if you guessed prince, give yourself a prize). There is stilted dialogue, and the author's attempts to portray the supposed sexual attraction between prince and princess are really just awkward and uncomfortable and decidedly un-sexy. There's a strong message of the importance of being a "good girl" and abstaining from sex before marriage, which isn't a bad thing, it just occasionally felt heavy-handed. There were some good things—the supporting characters had the potential to be interesting (though most weren't on page enough to fulfill that potential) and there's no ridiculous love triangle (Seriously, YA authors, stop with this already.), but it's mostly just bland and predictable and did I mention that the princess is a complete Mary Sue? And the court wizard is named after one of the Three Wise Men? Or maybe he is one of the Three Wise Men (which would honestly not surprise me one bit)?

Sigh.

But, hey, dragons! So two stars.
