Kit Frazier, taken by Barbary pirates, spent years of hell as a slave. Eventually he made his way back to England with Alex Morgan, another young Barbary slave. Both had to deal with physical and mental scars that would take time, patience and the care of someone special to overcome. Madeline Wilson, living with her Uncle Frank and Cousin Rose, has need of a husband but seems to be having difficulty finding one. With her selfish immature cousin to care for and an uncle that is less along with their household to supervise she leads a life she was not raised for and not necessarily one she enjoys. Kit and Maddy are drawn to one another but their journey to a happy future requires soul searching, experiences difficulties and requires growth on both their parts. I liked both of them and hoped that the horrible experiences Kit experienced as a slave would not derail their happily ever after.
