I thoroughly enjoyed reading Never Cry Mercy by L.T. Ryan. This story almost mimicked a typical Jack Reacher novel, except that it appears like Jack Noble lost his super powers in this one. Jack has car trouble and lands in a Texas town where everyone knows everyone. During that first night, Jack is approached by the town's bad boy enforcers and almost gets into a fight. He is saved, at the last moment, by a former NYC detective who is now in the witness protection program. Together, they begin work on cleaning up the town, however, the main kingpin is a former black ops operator. His reach is far and there's not much he doesn't know or can find out. He learns the true identity of Jack and of the former detective, and intends to destroy them both.

The story jumps back and forth between current days and 1988 when Jack's sister was raped and murdered. Turns out that Jack's current adversary also knows Jack's father and who was responsible for his sister's death.

Fast reading and highly recommended. I didn't care for the ending - as it's a cliff hanger without closure to the story - yet I ran right out and purchased it anyway. As for the plot, I enjoyed Ryan's earlier stories where he and his clandestine crew worked together on missions. ( )
