I ended up re-reading this play after it cropped up in another context. Set in the 1930s, in a public school, Another Country has at its centre two boys, Bennett and Judd, who both fail to fit in. The former because of his growing realisation of his homosexuality, the latter because of his communism. A film version starring Rupert Everett as Bennett (he had played the part in the stage versions earlier) and Colin Firth as Judd was made a couple of years later. I managed to tape it off television once, but the tape has since worn out, so it's been a few years since I last saw it or read the play. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Another Country is set in an English public school in the early 1930's where future leaders are being prepared for their roles in the ruling class. Two of the central characters are outsiders: Guy Bennett is coming to terms with homosexuality and Tommy Judd is a committed Marxist. Judd wants to abolish the whole system of British life; Bennett wants a successful career within it. The school and the system have traditional ways of dealing with rebels.
