She has become my favorite author. She has such a fascinating way of writing. Like the majority of her books, I definitely give it a 5 star review. I was hardly able to out the book down! ( ) (3.5 stars) From www.pingwings.ca From Goodreads: Sometimes you don’t wake up. But if you happen to, you know things will never be the same. This was a book club pick, and my first Ellen Hopkins book. I hadn’t read one before because the subject matter of her books I’d heard of sounded way too heavy, so I was a bit anxious about reading this one. I was also intimidated by the size (600 pages!) and the fact that it was a verse novel. It took a long time for me to get into this book because of the format, and the dark subject matter, but it became a surprisingly quick read. The book deals with a lot of intense, uncomfortable subjects but never in a way that seems unrealistic or heavy-handed. I had a tough time following the changing narration early on. The book alternates between Tony, Vanessa, and Connor narrating, and their voices were not distinct to me. If I’d put the book down for a while, I found myself needing to flip back a few pages to see whose section I was reading, but as the book went on, it became easier for me to sort it out. I must say, the ending really shocked me. I didn’t see something like that coming, although now I wonder if I was being way too naive. Regardless, it hit me hard and I was still thinking about it long after I finished the book and put it down. While I’m not sure that I am ready to read another of Ellen Hopkins’ books quite yet, this one is recommended if you want an intense read about heavy subjects and characters who will have you rooting for them all the way through. This is a book that will stay with you. This is an excellent book. Ellen Hopkins does a fantastic job telling the story in poetry. At first, I was not sure if I would "get into" the format. However, Ms. Hopkins's skill as a writer is quite extraordinary. She can give depth to the characters and the reader insights into the characters by altering her style of poetry with each character. I could feel what the characters were feeling and sympathized with all of them. I would certainly recommend this book. I am looking forward to reading its sequel, Perfect. This was amazing!!! I love this book so much and a lot like the other books that I fall in love with I can’t put it down. I felt sympathy, anger and it was like I was in the book. The book was written so skillfully I aspired to write like this! I cried and was left in awe while and during reading this. The ending is so unexpected and I really saw the character development and the characters opening up as well!!! All in all I love this book!! geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
