“Environmentalism” by Ramachandra Guha is a book that will captivate you if you want to get a broad sweep of the various environmental movements that have swept the world over the last few hundred years.

Mr. Guha writes engagingly. For someone like me, who is reading many books on the environment these days, he provides an entirely new perspective. I like this.

The book explores the influences people have had on each other and has demonstrated how these influences have grown collectively.

I would ask him to update the book. In 2020, we have many global leaders who deny climate change and challenge the science without any facts. I ask him to update the book and analyze how events of the last few years will change the world we live in. ( )

I suppose many readers of this book appreciate that it is short, but I wished it had been a bit longer. As an introduction to the history of environmentalism, this book covers a lot of ground, very quickly. Unless one is just reading this book as a springboard for further study or to look up specific dates for a research paper, reading this book is a bit mind-numbing and exhausting, all at once. Still, for a textbook, this was a decent book. It just annoys me buying books for classes that are not really readable, so I wish this one had a bit more context and better storytelling to make the presented facts more digestible and engaging. ( )
