Reese was a well-known bridge expert who, until he was somewhat discredited by a scandal associated with alleged cheating at a major tournament, commanded great respect among devotees. This book is a series of real-world problem hands which Reese briefly describes and then subjects to the following formula: list the various options that might be possible in the given situation; analyze the pros and cons of each; come to a suggested "best choice", based on the afore-described reasoning; provide general reflections on the issue at the heart of the problem. Some of the specifics have changed over the past 40+ years, which is the reason for the relatively low rating: for example, opening a hand with 11-14 points is no longer standard practice, and 24 is not the magic number for game -- 25 is now, for majors and no-trump. Despite these developments, Reese is still worth reading because he describes the thought processes of a master player. The guidelines may have evolved over the years, but the mentality of an expert has not. Best to read Reese, and others of his vintage, after learning the modern basics from someone like Audrey Grant.
