Warners Brothers was one of the few studios in the 30's that took the plots of their films from the daily headlines in the nation's newspapers. From the gangster films like Public Enemy and Little Caesar to films describing live on a chain gang like I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang to the America First idea of Black Legion, the films were hard hitting. This book provides an introduction to Warner Brothers studio and then goes through the 1930's and discusses the headlines and the films. It concludes at the start of WWII. The film has an extensive notes and bibliography section. I only wish someone made films like this these days. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
This book looks at how the Warner Bros. studio used edgy, stylistic, and brutally honest films to construct a view of America from 1927-1941. Author Chris Yogerst looks at how the Warner Bros. films during this period represented important cultural and social changes-from the coming of sound in film, the Great Depression, the rise of crime, and the increased concern about fascism leading up to World War II.
