Performing Arts Finalist of the 11th Annual National Indie Excellence Awards (NIEA). If Shakespeare was alive today, what kind of play would he write? That is the question writer M.J. Burgess answers in the new play, The Charioteer of Rome. Written in honor of the four hundredth anniversary of Shakespeare's death (1616-2016), The Charioteer of Rome is the story of the legendary charioteer Milesares' quest for immortality with the help of his brothers - The senator Sapienas, former champion Secundus and the Roman Gods of Olympus. It is a fast-paced, original tale of sibling rivalry, brotherly love, and the greatest sport in the Ancient world. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

Language used was modern, not Elizabethan. I didn't like the bawdy bits, e.g., the poem and a few other remarks. I thought the description of the chariot race in Act 4 by the servant Kyrio to his blind grandfather excellent; that was my favorite part. And I liked best the character of Valentinius/Amoris, the self-assured woman in man's clothing. All other characters did have distinct personalities though. I appreciated the author's extensive description in her notes of chariot racing.
Thanks to Goodreads for an ARC in exchange for my honest review. ( )
