This book is not without its flaws, but the worldbuilding and the mystery, and the messy characters all seen from Nate's cock-eyed point of view while hints and puzzles tornado around him made it worth my while. I'm very likely to read more in the series - my highest compliment. ( )

Nate is part of the old, secretive Black family. They are strange to say the least, and each of them possesses some type of psychic ability. Nate has been told to hide it all his life. He hasn't been guided. He didn't have the easiest childhood and remains an outcast in his town. Relationships are rocky in the Black family so he mostly just keeps to himself. Nate's power is low-level empathy. He can feel all the negativity from everyone with whom he comes into contact. Every vibe he gets is in some way a downer to his system until he meets Trent. Trent is like a light in the dark, sunshine breaking through the rain. Nate feels warmth and calmness coming from Trent and wants to feel more of it. Luckily Trent is drawn to Nate also.

I easily developed affection and understanding for Nate and Trent. Neither personality is overly sweet or alpha. They both are a little standoffish to most of society. I totally get that. Let me just say empath sex is beyond hot. Yes indeed. The suspense and mystery elements are real attention grabbers. I couldn't wait to learn if my guesses were correct, who everyone really was and what actually was happening. I stayed up late into the night reading with this gem. It hooked me in the best way. Insight is a gay paranormal romance, supernatural thriller and murder mystery all rolled into one exceptional novel.

Excellent! Sharp, suspenseful and well written, it drew me in from the start. While it answered the question of who killed Theo, it left plenty of unanswered questions that have me jonesing for the next book. Highly recommended. ( )

A whole family of psychics is a fairly unusual idea to start with, but then adding all the family politics and disagreements that can happen in any group of relatives gives the concept of “family feud” a whole new dimension. Seen from Nate’s point of view, who has been an outcast ever since his mother died, the Blake family issues are made worse when his twin brother turns up dead in New York, Nate has a vision that tells him not all is as it seems, and his super-creepy aunt suddenly takes an interest in him after years of derision and neglect. What emerges is a mystery of dangerous proportions, a need for Nate to finally come to terms with his empathic abilities, and more secrets and revelations than I could have imagined. The result is a spellbinding psychic thriller that had me glued to the pages.

Nate hates his psychic abilities – they are not reliable, his family thinks they’re pitiful compared to what the rest of them can do, and they prevent Nate from connecting with others. He barely makes a living and is about to be evicted when his talent changes. Nate suddenly has visions about his twin’s death in New York – just as news about his suicide reaches the family in Texas. Nate doesn’t believe it was suicide, and his need to find out the truth sets in motion a series of events that has him travel to New York, encounter a man who could be the love of his life, and discover that, contrary to what he has been taught, psychics are not all that rare.

Trent is a realist. He is an engineer on a postgraduate program who is traveling home to New York for a break, and he picks up Nate on the way. Trent is sarcastic and a skeptic but he believes Nate and is very supportive. But when they discover an underground psychic community (hence the series name), secrets begin to pop up around every corner, and several people go missing, Nate and Trent have their hands full trying to figure it out – and stay alive!

This book was a great surprise. Not just because it is the first paranormal story by this author I have had the pleasure to read, but because it is full of mystery, very suspenseful, and has multilayered characters who fascinated me more the more I found out about them. Dark family secrets and attempts to gain power by feuding factions in the psychic world are interwoven with clandestine activities and ambiguity to the point where this becomes a thriller more than a romance. And yet, Nate and Trent’s relationship is central to everything that happens. Their emotions build and as they discover how connected they are, so does their strength. And they need every ounce of it to survive what’s going on.

If you like your stories suspenseful and mysterious, if you enjoy watching two men get to know each other while battling villains they only gradually discover, and if you’re looking for a read that is creepy, gritty, spellbinding, and nail-bitingly intense, then you will probably like this novel as much as I do. It opens up a whole new world of potential adventures, and I hope the sequel will be published soon - if not earlier than that!
