Menace from Back Space Looming out of the Dust of Time The Complex Logic Laws were the result of a war waged hundreds of years in the past, when two human powers threw massive AI navies at each other and nearly annihilated themselves. Being human, they blamed their tools for this near miss; they destroyed what was left of the sentient ships, and made it illegal to be, manufacture, or shelter an independent logic. Strangely, however, the Free Ships and other AIs did not turn themselves in or suicide, they merely became wary of humans, and stayed under their scans. A clandestine support network grew up, including hidden yards where smart ships were manufactured, and mentors--humans specially trained to ease a new intelligence into the universe--socialized them, and taught them what they needed to know to survive. Among those with a stake in the freedom of Independent Logics is Theo Waitley, who is somewhat too famously the captain of intelligent ship Bechimo. Theo's brother, Val Con yos'Phelium, presides over a household that has for a generation employed an AI butler. Recently, he approved the "birth" of the butler's child, who was sent, with human mentor Tolly Jones, to rescue or destroy an orphaned AI abandoned at a remote space station. Then there's Uncle, the shadowy mastermind from the Old Universe, whose many projects often skirt the boundaries of law, both natural and man-made - and the puppet-masters at the Lyre Institute, whose history is just as murky - and a good deal less honorable. All have an interest in the newly-awakening Self-Aware Logic that is rumored to have the power to destroy universes. The question is: Who will get to it first?… (meer)

This is not a book that will make sense in isolation, in the author's usual pattern this book takes up right after the events of The Gathering Edge. There are a lot of story threads and characters in this that tie up loose ends.
There is some exciting action as Admiral Bunter and Tolly Jones are trapped by the Lyre Institute. The Bechimo and her crew finally return to Surebleak to gain a judgement to legalize AL.

This latest entry in the Liaden series wrapped up several plot lines from the previous books (though not all). I would have liked more about the Clutch Turtles but given the ending, I anticipate they will be more involved in the next book... ( )

Better than many of the last handful of books in the series. More scenes with my favorite characters and the cast of characters was held to a minimum. I wasn’t asked to get to know and care about a bunch of new extraneous people in this one. And yeah! For the resolution oh Dav’s situation. ( )

Being a household of Liaden fans, we naturally bought this book right away. I got to read it first by virtue of being the one who noticed it was available. :)

First, the good: It ties up some loose ends, including finally and definitively linking the Crystal Solder/Dragon books to the present-day in a lot of ways. Yay!

Then the bad: I cannot think of a more anti-climactic ending. Plus, the need to keep checking in with so many characters at once left things feeling fragmented, and there was, to my mind, no real emotional arc or character development- everyone just did their thing.

In general, I think it's a sign of Series Bloat when the most interesting thing in a book is a new character and setting (in this case, Tocohl and the space station). It was a relief to spend time with someone who was still learning and growing, rather than Being Awesome (In Couples). The series has also begun to suffer from No One Ever Dies Syndrome- see Ren Zel, the personification of Deus Ex Machina.

I have enough faith in Lee and Miller to half-convince myself that I'm just missing things, or not attuned to their emotional wavelength anymore, or something. Or maybe that's just what I want to believe. Still, I miss the early days of brash and bold characters making mistakes and finding love in a universe more strange and wonderful than they can know. The latest installment has several plot threads that finally come to a conclusion. Does Daav return home, does Theo return home even stuff going back to the Crystal duology shows up here. Is it the end of the series, no it isn’t since there is still the Department’s agents that want to get them. Surebleak is still growing and changing due to Korval moving there. Shan isn’t heard from in this book and the ending certainly has you leaving the reader on edge as to the new arrivals to Surebleak have to say to Korval. As much as I enjoyed things in the book the last few pages were the best and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.
