"This is the life-story of Margaret Malcolm, a pioneer advocate in the 1970 and 1980s for the role of women in educational leadership. Written by her brother Wilf Malcolm, a former Vice-Chancellor of Waikato University, it provides an account of the significant events of her life and career, including her appointment in 1982 as the first woman Principal of a Teachers’ College in New Zealand. The book includes an exposition of some of Margaret Malcolm’s spoken and written views, still relevant today, on the nature of educational leadership, including the role of women within that leadership. It is a snapshot of the social life and educational context of a talented young woman who achieved beyond the norms for women in New Zealand in the mid 20th century, making it a valuable contribution to New Zealand’s social and educational history."--Publisher description. It is not an academic biography but rather a short piece 'intended, chiefly, to sustain knowledge and memory of her person and accomplishments and her significant contribution to the growing role of women in educational leadership in New Zealand in the 1970s and 1980s.' (p.7)
In 1966 she became a lecturer in English at Palmerston North Teachers' College and stayed there until 1982. At the time of her appointment as Principal of Wellington Teachers' College, she was Vice-Principal at the PNTC under Pat Whitwell and latterly Jim Lovett.
I found her biblical justification/explanation for the equality of men and women interesting and surprising. In fact this small book was an eye-opener in terms of describing a member of the Open Brethren Church.
There are some errors which only a reader in the College of Education world might pickup e.g. Robert [sic Robin] Healey - Head of English at Palmerston North College of Education. There is a short index which is better than none at all.
