When Candice Curry was a little girl, she put her hand in her father's back pocket so that she wouldn't get lost in large crowds. Little did she know that as she followed him, he was plying his trade: conning people. Her family drove stolen cars, lived in stolen houses, and shopped with stolen credit cards. Drug use was regular, as were visits from strange people who were trying to track her father down. Though she eventually cut ties with her father, Candice could not ignore the scars that were left from her childhood. This is her story, one steeped in secrets but one that, ultimately, led her to a place of forgiveness and freedom. As she struggles to understand her criminal father, as well as her own imperfect life, Candice comes to realize that we are not defined by our circumstances but rather by how we react to those circumstances. She's found peace in the knowledge that God doesn't love us because we're perfect--but because he is.… (meer)

Candice Curry grew up with one crazy disfuntional father. This is basically a story of how one woman comes to terms with her screwy childhood and move on with her life. It’s not a depressing book. It actually gives the reader hope. ( )

A beautiful story of forgiveness and grace. The author leads us through her childhood and what it's like to live with lies. Ultimately broken, she finds redemption though the love of Jesus Christ. ( )

A Story of Lies, Desperation, and Finding God

Ms. Curry bravely shares with grace what it was like to grow up with a con man and a convicted criminal.

The author writes with so much heart about her painful childhood and how deep the wounds left by her father had affected her well-being. This is an emotional story of a kid with an unimaginable childhood that kept a brave face and hid her turmoil to herself. She only wanted to be love and accepted. This quick and easy read drew me in from page one, told plainly without bitterness she speaks with respect of her feeling towards her father. Later on in life she seeks redemption and was able to find solace in god and finally peace of heart with a loving husband and children. This is a unique and heartbreaking journey that ends beautifully.

This testimony took courage to write and I admire Ms. Curry for doing so. If God was her path to forgiveness and happiness I am happy it worked….

It is hard to like or dislike memoirs after all they belong to the author. It is the way it is said and Ms. Curry does it with passion.

I received this ARC from the publisher Baker Books via the Early Reviewer Program for an honest and unbiased review ( )

Early Reviewers Advanced Readers Copy.

The author tells her story of growing up with a con man for a father. He could be a lot of fun. Her friends loved her fun dad. He could be charming. But he was not someone you could count on.

She struggles with feeling worthless, wanting his approval and wanting nothing to do with him.
She tells of her struggle to build a life for herself and let go of the past.

I wish she had been more specific about what principals she learned when she accepted Christ and how her family applied them. ( )

A heartwarming and moving story. Candice is the survivor of a dysfunctional childhood spent trying to earn the love of a mentally ill father. But love cannot be earned and the search twiisted her early life. This is the story of how she found her way back into the arms of her loving Father above. ( )

To my mom—You’re the behind-the-scenes hero and always have been. You’ve sacrificed over and over to make sure I’ve always had what I need and have given me as many of my wants as you could. For that I am forever grateful. Thank you for being my loudest cheerleader and my one and only Shema Shema.

To Jordan—My entire life has been filled with belly laughs and a sense of security because you’re the greatest big brother a girl could ask for. To sum it all up: “Turn out the lights, I lost my necklace.”

To Brandon—You’re my entire world, for better or worse, in sickness and in health, till death do us part. No matter what we’ve walked through or what waits for us in the future, I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else. Thank you for your patience, support, and humor. You’re my Kevin Arnold.
