Kjell of Jeru had always known who he was. He'd never envied his brother or wanted to be king. He was the bastard son of the late King Zoltev and a servant girl, and the ignominy of his birth had never bothered him. But there is more to a man than his parentage. More to a man than his blade, his size, or his skills, and all that Kjell once knew has shifted and changed. He is no longer simply Kjell of Jeru, a warrior defending the crown. Now he is a healer, one of the Gifted, and a man completely at odds with his power. Called upon to rid the country of the last vestiges of the Volgar, Kjell stumbles upon a woman who has troubling glimpses of the future and no memory of the past. Armed with his unwanted gift and haunted by regret, Kjell becomes a reluctant savior, beset by old enemies and new expectations. With the woman by his side, Kjell embarks upon a journey where the greatest test may be finding the man she believes him to be.… (meer)

An emotional roller coaster albeit, intriguing and enjoyable. The characters were well formed and made the story that much better.
The emotional contradictions and conflicts faced by both Kjell and Sasha was balanced perfectly.
The story in itself, the dangers they faced added to the emotional tone set in the book. Once you picked the book you can't let go until the end. ( )

Ok fine. Amy Harmon pulled out that last 10% like a master. It was convenient, sure, but it was done well.

I'm subtracting a star for the "whiny baby" stage that occurs somewhere after the romance is established-round 75%-90%.

It's Kjell's book, and I like his sense of duty and lack of ambition. However, because we hear his side, it made it difficult to connect to WTF-ery of some of Sasha's devotion and personality. I think this is some decent fantasy but I did struggle with the self-sacrificing commitment to misery and some weird obligation and surrender bits. Those MCs just don't do it for me. Having both characters like that? Epic love, sure, but at times I was hoping this wouldn't be HEA. Like wouldn't it be better as a tragedy?

The writing is great, and as usual, Steve Wests narration probably kept me plowing through the overwrought bits in the last 25%.

It's a 4 star mixed review. Go figure! ( )

Another great book, a continuation of The Bird and the Sword, the life of Kjell. A beautiful story of love. ( )
