First, the author’s writing is not engaging and it is rather complicated. On the first page, Grannie exclaims to Katie, “Words have wings and the wee folk have ears.” Grand says, “Tis the plenty of plain patties that fills our stomachs.” I think the author’s writing and language in both of these statements would be boring and confusing for a third-fourth grade reader, even though it is intended to represent the way people speak in Ireland. The second reason I disliked this book is because of the illustrations. The illustrator’s use of paint makes the images appear messy and imprecise rather than vivid. The colors are also dark and sometimes people or objects in the pictures blend in with the background. On one page, Grannie and Grand Da’s dark gray hair almost completely blends in with the gray wall in the background. The big idea of this book is to teach about forgiveness and the significance behind wishes: the only ones that matter are those that come from the heart.
