This wonderful novel reminded me of those classy noir-type films of the 1940s, which I absolutely love. And, what a fantastic and appropriate title! The classic black and white cover photo proves that sometimes you CAN judge a book by its cover. This beautiful image perfectly captures the treat of a story inside. Underwood transports the reader back to that time period with crisp prose laced with nostalgic glimpses of books, films, and old radio shows that add to the atmosphere and a truly enjoyable reading experience. I couldn’t put this one down. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
A lovely young woman must finally leave the orphanage which is the only home and family she has ever known, and make her way in the world as an adult. Traveling to Palm Beach, Florida by train, she is quickly drawn into a vortex of love, wealth, and murder. Set during the 1940s and paying homage to the finer pulp stories of the era, this is a tale to keep readers in suspense! As a bonus for readers of the trade paperback version of I Died Twice, two other stories of suspense, The Strangler's Tune, and I Won't Forget You are included.
