The Jacob's Ladder Reading Comprehension Program targets reading comprehension skills in high-ability learners by moving students through an inquiry process from basic understanding to critical analyses of texts, using a field-tested method developed by the Center for Gifted Education at William & Mary. Students in grades 6-7 will learn to comprehend and analyze any reading passage after completing the activities in Jacob's Ladder, Grades 6-7 (2nded.). Using skill ladders connected to short stories, poetry, essays, and nonfiction, students move from lower order, concrete thinking skills to higher order, critical thinking skills. The ladders include multiple skills necessary for academic success, covering language arts standards such as sequencing, determining cause and effect, classifying, making inferences, and recognizing main ideas, themes, and concepts. The second edition of the book builds off the previous Level 4 edition, including new readings and ladders for student use. The "Jacob's Ladder" guide provides teachers with an explanation of the nature of supplementary tasks that scaffold reading comprehension. Also included in the guide is an overview of the goals and objectives of the "Jacob's Ladder" tasks and suggestions for implementation, giving every teacher the tools needed to promote successful reading comprehension.… (meer)

This book was received in exchange for an honest review. The format of this book is spot-on: It is designed to take students from a cursory reading, step-by-step through a more advanced understanding of texts. Everything is included for the teacher who wants to implement these lessons in a classroom. The only issue I had was with some of the texts selected for the work. As an avid reader, even I had trouble keeping myself motivated to get through some of these, and I cannot imagine subjecting a middle-schooler, no matter what their academic level might be, to some of these "classics." As in my own classroom, I would have preferred more organically compelling texts rather than some works that are in there "because that's the kind of thing we include in a liberal-arts education." I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I work as a children's librarian and have used the variety of classic literature: poems, nonfiction, and fiction in my programming. It would be well suited for reading/ESL teachers, homeschooling families, librarians, ESL tutors, etc.
I highly recommend!

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. This book has a wide selection of stories that range from poems, nonfiction, and fiction works of literature. These are written my notable authors such as William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, and Guy de Maupassant. My daughter is in middle school and has immensely enjoying reading this book. I highly recommended it! ( )

This is the third Jacob's Ladder book that I have won from the Early Reviewer's list. I always pass these along to my friend who teaches elementary school. She loves them and is always asking me if I have anymore. ( )

I love it! I wish I had this resource when I first became a Reading Teacher. I currently teach 8th grade English, but I found many of the passage and lesson examples to still be very applicable for my lower/struggling readers. I feel very fortunate to have this resource as a part of my professional library! This is great for differentiated instruction! ( )
