Elmore Leonard’s western themed stories were impressive to read yet overshadowed by Lamour and Grey. Mr. Leonard remains perhaps and deserves equal status for his engaging characters and stark portrayal of the world around his characters. 4 novels and 8 short stories are included in this volume. ( ) Last Stand at Saber River - Classic Leonard, but set in the mountains of Arizona at the end of the Civil War. His style and plot work are already evident. Finished in hours. ***** (Mar 2019) Hombre - Back to Arizona, with a half-Navajo intervening between a stage robbery and a crooked Indian Agent. The Wild West ensues. ***** (Jan 2020) Valdez is Coming - Solid, tight, well told. Valdez does indeed make the trip. This work demands to be finished, trying to slow down and savor the end. ***** (Apr 2021) Forty Lashes Less One - waited two years, finished in a rush. Prison break from train robbery, two cons have their way with the prison boss & warden, down to the last line. ***** (May 2023) Stories - all excellent, sorry to see book end. (June 2023) This is collection of novels and short stories with a Western theme. They range from classic Westerns such as Hombre, the story of the stoic Indian who sacrifices his life at the end, to the less ones such as Forty Lashes and less, that takes place in a prison in the West but appears more like novel bordering Western and non-Western theme, As in his other novels, he is good at depicting clearly his characters. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

"One of the great storytellers of our time, Elmore Leonard perfected his craft writing Westerns, a genre he loved. These tales--some adapted into such outstanding films as Hombre, Valdez Is Coming, and 3:10 to Yuma--are unexcelled for their wiry tautness, sharp characterizations, and jolts of unexpected humor. For sheer stripped-down narrative tension Leonard never did anything better, and the fresh twists he finds in resolving the genre's classic confrontations reveal a master at work. Whether describing a Civil War veteran coming back to find his homestead stolen (Last Stand at Saber River), a man raised by Apaches treated with contempt by the white settlers who will ultimately depend on him for their survival (Hombre), a local constable, tricked into killing an innocent man, fighting back against the powerful man who duped him (Valdez Is Coming), or two convicts in a desert prison--one African American and the other half-Apache--plotting a near-impossible escape (Forty Lashes Less One), Leonard's westerns are tough, suspenseful, convincing, and beautifully spare in style."-- Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
