On the day that her father is to be buried Madelience suffers further tragedy when her seven year old son falls from a high window and is left paralysed. Madeleine must look after her son and also her position as head of an important bank. However she has little head for business and trusts the wrong people, losing her inheritance and leaving herself and her son destitute. From this Madeleine has to build her life again in the Paris of the 1930s. This is the second book in Lemaitre's trilogy set in Paris between the wars. I found this one quite difficult to engage with for the first section but once the plot had started to kick in properly I realised what makes Lemaitre so good. In common with many classical writers he takes a cast of characters and develops them slowly and with great care. Sometimes the prose drags a little but the sly humour is always there. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
"Terrific . . . Easily the most purely entertaining novel I have read so far this year" David Mills, The Sunday Times "A really excellent suspense novelist" Stephen King The second volume of Pierre Lemaitre's enthralling, award-winning between-the-wars trilogy In 1927, the great and the good of Paris gather at the funeral of the wealthy banker, Marcel Péricourt. His daughter, Madeleine, is poised to take over his financial empire (although, unfortunately, she knows next to nothing about banking). More unfortunately still, when Madeleine's seven-year-old son, Paul, tumbles from a second floor window of the Péricourt mansion on the day of his grandfather's funeral, and suffers life-changing injuries, his fall sets off a chain of events that will reduce Madeleine to destitution and ruin in a matter of months. Using all her reserves of ingenuity, resourcefulness, and a burning desire for retribution, Madeleine sets about rebuilding her life. She will be helped by an ex-Communist fixer, a Polish nurse who doesn't speak a word of French, a brainless petty criminal with a talent for sabotage, an exiled German Jewish chemist, a very expensive forger, an opera singer with a handy flair for theatrics, and her own son with ideas for a creative new business to take Paris by storm. A brilliant, imaginative, free-falling caper through between-the-wars Paris, and a portrait of Europe on the edge of disaster. Translated from the French by Frank Wynne With the support of the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union From the reviews for The Great Swindle "The most purely enjoyable book I've read this year" Jake Kerridge, Sunday Telegraph "The vast sweep of the novel and its array of extraordinary secondary characters have attracted comparisons with the works of Balzac. Moving, angry, intelligent - and compulsive" Marcel Berlins, The Times Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

Whoever said ‘vengeance is a dish best served cold’ absolutely had Madeleine Péricourt in mind.
Set in prewar France of the late 1920’s, Madeleine is the heiress to a premier banking family.
On the day of her father’s funeral, inexplicably her beloved son Paul defenestrates himself out of the second storey onto his grandfather’s coffin.
When Madeleine’s fortunes suffered a reversal bought about by her jilted fiancé Gustavo Joubert (her father’s trusted senior executive) and aided by her companion Léonce, Madeleine throws off her cloak of despondency and takes action. She sets in place an involved and torturous revenge. For her lover Andre she has something else in mind.
The man who helps her, Monsieur Dupré is an interesting foil to Madeleine.
The pace is s_l _o_w to start with, but by the middle I was caught up in political, economical and social doings of the times, particularly as Hitler’s Germany is looming on the horizon like a dark cloud. France’s tax laws have the spotlight of history on them. Her Uncle Charles is involved.
Paul’s relationship with singer Solange Gallinato is pure opera. I loved it.
Vladi his polish nurse/assistant is a breath of fresh air.
Meanwhile Nazism and Fascism are murmuring in the distance, whilst Madeline makes her play.
Strangely beguiling. By the end I was hooked.
