"An elite police squad hunts a manipulative mastermind out to publically execute criminals the law cannot reach. A wild thriller and deadly game of cat-and-mouse from one of China's most popular authors. For fans of Jo Nesbo, Se7en, and Hong Kong police cinema. The brutal murder of respected police officer Sergeant Zheng Haoming sends shockwaves through Chengdu, a modern metropolis in the heart of China's stunning Sichuan Province. He had been obsessed by an unsolved, eighteen-year-old murder case, until an entity calling themselves Eumenides (after the Greek goddess of vengeance and retribution) releases a terrifying manifesto. Is the manifesto a sick joke, or something more sinister? Soon, the public starts 'nominating' worthy targets for Eumenides to kill, and two days later, Sergeant Zheng is dead. Eumenides' cunning game is only getting started. The police receive a "death notice," a chilling note announcing the the killer's next target, the crimes they have committed, and the date of their execution. The note is both a challenge and a taunt to the police. When the first victim dies in public, under their complete protection, the police are left stunned. More death notices are coming. The chase is on. Death Notice is an explosive, page-turning thriller filtered through a vibrant cultural lens. Zhou Haohui expertly adds an exhilarating new prespective to the twists and tropes of the genre all fans love, making for a uniquely propulsive and entertaining read"--"An elite police squad hunts a manipulative mastermind out to publically execute criminals the law cannot reach"--… (meer)

There is a certain genre about killers who are superbly able to outwit the forces of law and order – The Silence of the Lambs is the most obvious, but I also recently read Thirteen by Steve Cavanaugh – and there were several scenes where I found it very difficult to suspend my disbelief – though a couple of these are in fact fairly well grounded in local scenery, a murder carried out in full view of the police in front of the Deye Building in Citizens’ Square, and another historical gruesome death at Mount Twin Deer Park, none of which are locations that I have been able to identify on the map. The series is a good enough example of its kind, the tensions between cops from the city and periphery, university graduates and non-graduates, and men and women, all well portrayed against a somewhat implausible backdrop; the means and motivation of their opposition remaining unclear. The situation is sufficiently generic that the first book was adapted without difficulty into a film made and in 2023 this year. ( )

I don't like to read a book that is part of a series and ends in a cliff-hanger, and whose sequels are not out yet. Death Notice is one such book, one that I would've done well to wait until all the three books of the series had released before starting to read. But, I have read it and now will have to look out for the remaining ones to get translated into English, or learn Chinese myself...
The novel has a twisty plot that keeps the reader wondering what it was all about right until the last quarter of the book. Most of the lead characters have something or the other from their past that they wish to hide, which makes each one of them a suspect. That, and the fast pace of the narrative keep the pages turning and turning. Initially, the novel is a bit difficult to get into, maybe due to the translation, but it gets better as one moves forward. I liked it in spite of a few farfetched sequences, but not knowing when I would get to read the remaining books makes the experience less satisfying. I may upgrade my rating once I finish the series, possibly! ( )

A sadistic vigilante killer returns after an 18-year hiatus. In the distant past, the aptly-named Eumenides (Greek goddess of retribution) killed a high ranking corrupt policeman and two police cadets. Now, another senior police officer is murdered and Eumenides identifies his intended victims with death notices. The 4/18 task force is reassembled in Chengdu with Officer Pei, who had a close connection with the two cadets and is still haunted by their deaths. Eumenides toys with the police, punishing the guilty right under their noses and protection. I liked the cat and mouse game with the task force, and the cultural immersion in China. Gory. ( )

This is a breathless, fast-paced thriller that, with its multiple twists and turns, should have most readers hooked. The first of a trilogy, it's also frustratingly left at a point where you just need to keep reading but are left hanging! OK, it's a bit formulaic, and the characters are a little two-dimensional and predictable (everyone has a dark secret that drives them on), but it is skilfully crafted and has enough surprises to keep an avid crime reader entertained. For that, 4 stars.

(Also, why oh why do characters in crime novels never read other crime novels? It's like characters in horror films. The audience is screaming 'no, don't go into the dark deserted house', and the characters go 'hmm, let's have a look in here'!! For a bunch of elite cops, they don't half make some stupid choices in this book. 'Everything will be fine, we've got it covered', they say. NO!!!) ( )
