A very good book, about Mr. Lockwood’s life, and life in general...oh, and baseball also. If I had one complaint it would be that it didn’t go into great enough detail. Mr. Lockwood has some great insight (pun intended) on pitching, and life, which can be applied in many areas. If you are thinking about becoming a pitcher, or know someone who is, this book should be a must read. ( ) Skip Lockwood’s baseball memoir Insight Pitch: My Life As a Major League Closer is a cut above most entries in the genre. Very well written (but for a few glaring typos), Lockwood tells the intriguing story of his bumpy road in baseball: from a little leaguer with big dreams to high school phenom to signing as a “bonus baby” with the Kansas City Athletics (and the audacious move he successfully pulled off in negotiating that contract), his failures as an infielder and the switch to pitching to extend his career, and his eventual success as the closer for the New York Mets in the late 1970s. He lets the reader into his psyche, describing the mental preparation and visualization technique that he applied to pitching in the latter part of his career, and exactly how it feels to be on the mound pitching in the major leagues. This is a very good baseball story told by an excellent storyteller. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
You're straddling the pitcher's mound in Shea Stadium. The game rests in your hands. Your heart is pounding. Big money is at stake. You feel thousands of eyes burning your jersey as they wait for a pitch. You gulp at the air trying to settle your nerves. It's go time. Insight Pitch is a sports story that spills over three decades. Retired Major League Baseball pitcher Skip Lockwood tells anecdotes from throughout his career as a ballplayer, starting with his days as a Little Leaguer through his professional tenure with the Kansas City Athletics, Seattle Pilots, Milwaukee Brewers, California Angels, New York Mets, and Boston Red Sox, before his retirement in 1980. Along the way, he details both the on- and off-the-field shenanigans as well as the enormous psychological process that he underwent each and every time he took the mound. Readers will find some laughs along the way and marvel as they share the locker room with legends like Jesse Owens, Satchel Paige, Catfish Hunter, and Yogi Berra. Humorous but insightful, this book makes the perfect addition to any baseball fan's shelf. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
