This book grew out of a Stanford Graduate School of Business course (POLECON 584 - Managing Global Political Risk) that Drs Rice and Zegart have been teaching for more than six years. As they sought out references for the course, they found the field lacking and were thus compelled to compile their own representative case studies and develop frameworks for analysis that could be applied.

Political risk has always been a factor in state and business concerns throughout history, but the pace of change today requires us to plan, recognize, react, and recover more quickly than ever before. Doing so necessitates a more purposeful understanding of the operational environment, the actors, potential motivations and perceptions, possible outcomes, and mitigations. Rice and Zegart construct a simple -- but not simplistic -- framework that helps us understand, analyze, mitigate, and react to different risk outcomes with the help of some guiding questions. The case studies effectively exercise the framework with organizational successes and failures in how they handled shifting risk environments.

Well organized, easy to read, and well thought out by two deeply experienced professionals in not altogether overlapping fields. A must read for anyone involved in operational or strategic planning and really a seminal text for anyone wanting to specialize in this flavor of risk consultancy. ( )
