In 1936, long before the discovery of the Viking settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows, the Royal Ontario Museum made a sensational acquisition: the contents of a Viking grave that prospector Eddy Dodd said he had found on his mining claim east of Lake Nipigon. This book can clearly be regarded as a tour de force of impeccable research if you are a Canadian interested in this particular archaeological hoax from the 1930s, or if you live in the area of the 'crime scene'. It is impressively detailed. In fact, it is so densely filled with names, dates and detailed data that I, as a general reader with a special interest in hoaxes, almost lost the thread many times. It was hard going. Still, thorough research should always be commended, so I would give 6 stars for that if I could, but only 2 or 3 for readability. I'm sure this story could have been told in a more amusing way. It has all the elements that is needed for a fascinating and entertaining story But being an academic book for academics by an academic, it's probably just as it should be. ( )
