Onderdeel van de reeks(en)Baytown Boys (2)
Military duty called them away to war zones, but after tours overseas, the group of friends found their way back home as men, seeking the peaceful little seaside town. Now, the band of brothers, together once more, work to provide a place for less fortunate veterans to call home. Grant Wilder, one of the original Baytown Boys, came back from the war a changed man, walking away from his hometown and the girl he left behind. Jillian Evans worked for years to hide her broken heart, especially when Grant moved back home to become one of Baytown's police officers. He wanted friendship only, and that's what she'd give him. Focusing on her own career, she expanded her coffee shop into a local art galleria. Grant and the Baytown police fight against drugs running through the small, coastal town, but when Jillian is threatened, Grant has to fight his wartime demons to save her...and finally declare his love. This is Grant and Gillian's story.
From Book 1 we gleaned that Grant and Gillian had some history before the boys went off to serve in the military and when he returned, although she waited for him expecting the relationship to develop, as did most of their friends and family, he moved away taking a job elsewhere and then when he did return he 'dated' almost every woman known in the area except Gillian.
I have to say at the outset I don't like man-whore books at all, but although it is said that for Grant there was a parade of women, it is not mentioned in any detail or going on at present so it is more palatable. There is obviously a reason he behaves the way he does and this is explored as well as the issue of big men facing up to post war life. For me, although what he goes through is traumatic, he needed to be more of a man and prove that by having an adult conversation with her not by sleeping with everyone and shutting her out but admitting the problem is part of the issue.
It starts with Grant recovering from a hang over after attending Mitch and Tori's engagement party where Gillian had finally decided to stop pining for Grant and move on so she attended the party with another man. Grant did not take this well AT ALL. He has a go at her and then marches off picking up a girl and leaves with her. There is no detail as to what happened between them.
He then reconsiders and a few things take place and he decides to win her back.
Gillian is confused by his actions and personally I wanted her to make him work for it a bit more, she seems to give in quite quickly, and is could appear that he is only behaving this way now someone else is interested in her. He does apologize but I would have made him work for it.
There is also a case going on involving drugs and you just know this is going to affect Gillian somehow though the plot is not as simple as you first may think.
It's a good story, sweet, not too much angst, quite quick to get together but as there is history this is quite believable. There are some extra hints at the other friends lives that may lead to their stories and we catch up with Mitch and Tori. ( )
