Zig Reid-Harris has everything an eleven-year-old girl could ever want: a great home, two fantastic fathers named Deacon Reid and Lang Harris, and all the books she could possibly read. When a school assignment about holiday traditions unexpectedly broadsides her, she discovers burying the past isn't as easy as it looks, and the stark reality of her life before her adoption sinks in. Ashamed of the bleakness and poverty she came from, Zig struggles with the assignment until an epiphany strikes the whole family-it's time to start their own traditions. Zig and her fathers plunge into the insanity of holiday joy, exploring everything the season has to offer and learning how precious family truly is along the way.… (meer)

Awww.

This is a sweet Christmas story, ideal if you're in need of low angst and like kids. ( )

Tutus and Tinsel is Book 2.5, and a Christmas short story in the ‘Half Moon Bay’ series. This is told in third person from multiple character povs.

3.5 Stars

This story takes place a few years after the two previous books in the series. Zig is now a pre-teen and her class was assigned to write and present a paper about past family Christmas traditions. Because of Zig’s rotten background, she doesn’t have any good traditions and she feels cheated out of being normal. Lang and Deacon decide to set out to help create traditions for their family.

The author did a good job picking up right where she left off in the previous two books. The characters were consistent and we learn more about their pasts. Unfortunately reminiscing about the past was not what I expected from this book. The blurb implied Lang and Deacon going whole hog into creating Christmas traditions. I think there was only one, the gingerbread house, which was written about in some depth. Christmas tree hunting was even briefer. The rest of the events were shown through Zig’s presentation. I was disappointed with the discrepancy between the blurb and the actual plotline.

The story is well written, but from the beginning, I had moments of confusion of which character was speaking. I actually thought that Zig was the speaker when the story started and there were other instances when it felt like Zig’s pov until it was indicated that it was someone else.

I liked Tutus and Tinsel, but I thought Books 1 and 2 were better. This book was more about reminiscing and rehashing the other two stories, which was more appropriate to a New Year’s story rather than Christmas. Also, I found the povs confusing. I want to give this story 3.5 Stars, but the writing is pleasant despite the things I don’t like, and Goodreads doesn’t allow half stars, which it really should. I give Tutus and Tinsel, 4 Stars.

I was given and Advanced Review Copy of this book to read for an honest and unbiased opinion.
