"Ben Mezrich's 2009 bestseller The Accidental Billionaires is the definitive account of Facebook's founding and the basis for the Academy Award-winning film The Social Network. Two of the story's iconic characters are Harvard students Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss: identical twins, Olympic rowers, and foils to Mark Zuckerberg. Bitcoin Billionaires is the story of the brothers' redemption and revenge in the wake of their epic legal battle with Facebook. Planning to start careers as venture capitalists, the brothers quickly discover that no one will take their money after their fight with Zuckerberg. While nursing their wounds in Ibiza, they accidentally run into an eccentric character who tells them about a brand-new idea: cryptocurrency. Immersing themselves in what is then an obscure and sometimes sinister world, they begin to realize "crypto" is, in their own words, "either the next big thing or total bulls--t." There's nothing left to do but make a bet. From the Silk Road to the halls of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Bitcoin Billionaires will take us on a wild and surprising ride while illuminating a tantalizing economic future. On November 26, 2017, the Winklevoss brothers became the first bitcoin billionaires. Here's the story of how they got there--as only Ben Mezrich could tell it."--Dust jacket.… (meer)

I have read one other book on Bitcoin, How Money Got Free: Bitcoin and the Fight for the Future of Finance by Brian Eha, but this book tells the story better because it's told through the eyes of one of its early adopters: The Winklevoss Twins. Remember those guys?

And this is why Bitcoin Billionaires works as more than just another book about Bitcoin. It tracks against the lives of two Harvard grads who were once tangled up with Mark Zuckerberg at the founding of Facebook. (Yeah, those guys.) The author, Ben Mezrich, wrote the book The Social Network was based on, called The Accidental Billionaires, and much like a sequel this book picks up right where that book ended.

Cue the endless what-if's of me wondering why I didn't buy Bitcoin back in 2009. I know why but with hindsight being 20-20... oof. My hope now is to see this as David Fincher's next movie. ( )

Account of the early Bitcoin days, primarily focused on the Winklevoss twins and Charlie Shrem (BitInstant). Ironic that the same author who basically ruined the reputation of the Winklevoss twins through a caricature (and then a horrible movie) now has gone a bit too far the other way in either telling a story (or actively trying to right a wrong) in a second book.

Overall, it's a decent book, but as someone who was around during the time period/industry (although not involved with the specific people), it's a bit heavy handed, focuses on the wrong people, etc. ( )

To some extent this is a sequel to social network but it further explores the Winklevoss twins and is an introduction to Bitcoin. That story remains unfinished. ( )

I was hoping this would be on the scale of Bad Blood. However, it was more informative about Bitcoin and how the Winklevoss twins became it's biggest advocates. The book was short and I felt missing some details that would add to the juicy gossip feel that Bad Blood had. Overall though, I am glad I read it and learned a lot about the early days of Bitcoin. Ben Mezrich writes another page turner, this time about the redemption of the Winklevii and their 2nd act as Bitcoin champions and ultimately Billionaires. The early days of Bitcoin were clearly the Wild Wild West and given the writing style the book reads like fiction, except it actually happened. You get a great feel for Tyler and Cameron and what they were going through as they made headlines, first in the Facebook debacle, then as proto-VCs, and then as full-throated believers in the future of cryptocurrency. Mezrich does a great job with the other players as well, especially Charlie who gets a full character arc. The settings are described well enough to shoot a Netflix drama. My only issue is that the book feels a lot like season one. Our protagonists launch their regulated exchange, Gemini, at the end, but the future of Bitcoin is far from settled.

Warning: this book is definitely not a primer on Bitcoin or crypto and it helps if you have some idea what it is all about. If you don't, read a few of the thousands of articles out there first so you can understand why people are so passionate about it. ( )
