Delightful and Colorful! A cute little story of an older brother walking his younger brother through what he will encounter on his first day of school. Big Bro does a great job introducing his Little Bro to his new school. The illustrations are bright and colorful and help to set a whimsical backdrop for this enjoyable tale.

Using vintage colour tones and modern illustrations, we travel with a boy and his enthusiastic older brother to experience and then overcome the jitters we expect at the first day of school but with a fun twist, they take place in a circus. A diverse set of characters make this book a pleasure to show a modern urban classroom full of students. A teacher named Miss Stupendous and a school that is on the grounds of a zoo have all the typical juggling, unicycle riding and animal training you would expect. All of the first day anxieties are washed away. This clever take on school readiness will delight new school-goers and take a bit of the fear out of those first-day worries. (

This book does a cute job of comparing the first day of school with with life at the circus. Both the language and illustrations give homage to things like the circus barker, clowns, the strong man/woman, jugglers, trapeze artists, etc. The story is told in second person giving the reader a sense of belonging. The characters are inclusive, showing multiple races. The secondary character of the older brother while ever present, seemed to have a bigger part of the story in the end than he was in the circus analogy. This would be a great story at the beginning of school, but fewer kids will be able to relate as the circus seems to be a dying industry. (

I absolutely love the illustrations in this (though I question the decision to use gray as one of the colors rather than brown). The style is excellent though.

The story aspect I found a little less interesting, but kids will still enjoy it. The specificity of the older brother talking to a younger brother makes me feel like it's hard to gift a kid without an older brother. (
