The novels are set in Canada and have the two women in the title at 24 deciding to set up a detective agency for the poor people who live in the slums of Toronto. They accept little or no payment because Merinda is very rich and has a generous allowance and Jemima also works in the local department store. They spend their evenings dressing up in men's clothing and spying and snooping rather than deducing anything from clues. From chasing down missing cats they progress through to solving murders.
These books grated on me because of the overriding notion of the time is a woman is an old maid if she is still single at the age of 24 and the romance infused between Jem and the reporter Ray detracted from the main mysteries and cases in the books. Very disappointing. ( )
