rebeccanyc: Hugo and Mantel both create fiction: Hugo's is closer to the passions of the time and more philosphical, involving largely fictional character; Mantel's more distanced and historical. Hugo's novel deals with the counter-revolution in the Vendée, with a detour to Paris; Mantel's with the leaders of the revolution in Paris.…

Burning is not answering (Camille quoting Rousseau)
A mob has no soul, it has no conscience, just paws and claws and teeth.... The noise was some horror from the Book of Revelations, hell released and all its companies scouring the streets. (pp 223-224)
Where do they come from, these people? They're virgins. They've never been to war. They've never been on the hunting field. They've never killed an animal, let a lone a man. But they're such enthusiasts for murder, (p. 259)
I wonder why I ever bothered with sex, he thought; there's nothing in this breathing world so gratifying as an artfully placed semicolon. (p. 277)
'I remember the days,' Mirabeau said, 'when we didn't have public opinion. No one had ever heard of such a thing.' (p. 325)
Life has more complications in store than you can ever formulate or imagine. ( p. 430)
What is strange, in such a clean, precise man, is how much M. Robespierre likes children, and cats, and dogs. It's only the rest of us that put this worrying smile on his face. (p. 432)
Ask the man with the conscience which is more important, your friend or your country -- as him how he weighs an individual in the scheme of things, Ask him which comes first, his old pal or his new principles. (p. 463)
This idea of history as made by great men is quite nonsensical, when you look at it from the point of view of the people. The real heroes are those who have resisted tyrants, and it is in the nature of tyranny not only to kill whose who oppose it but to wipe their names out of the record, to obliterate them so that resistance seems impossible. (p. 566)
She has enjoyed sweeping down grand staircases, the visible exercise of power. (p. 569)
'Oh yes -- can we offer you an escort Citizen Deputy, to a greater place of safety?' 'The grave,' Camille said. 'The grave.' (p.651)
'The thing about nothing,' she said, 'is that Danton can't take it away.' (p. 656)
As he left the cafe and headed home to his desk, he felt that singular fluid running in his veins; it was like the old days of the Revolutions, the power of words moving through his bloodstream like a drug. (p. 674)
One day, a long time ago, his mother sat by a window making lace. The broad morning light streamed in on both of them. He saw that it was the gaps that were important, the spaces between the threads which made the pattern, and not the threads themselves. (p. 871)

He sees the girl on the window-seat, her body swollen, pregnant with death: he sees the light on her bent head; beneath her fingers the airy pattern, going nowhere, flying away.
