I enjoyed this story. It was cute, fluffy, and brimmed over with Christmassy goodness. The blurb does a good job of describing the plot so I’ll only go over it briefly. Lazlo is visiting the local town in order to buy more ornaments to add to his Christmas horde. He enters the ornament shop he has his eye on and spots Roman. He knows instantly that Roman is his mate and is in heat. Lazlo convinces Roman to return to Lazlo’s home to spend his heat with him. Roman is reluctant, but feels a strong pull to go with Lazlo. The rest of the story is Lazlo trying to convince Roman to stay, and telling him about dragons.
This book had a lot of humor in it and I really enjoyed that. The holiday feel was obvious because of Lazlo’s love of shiny baubles and over decorating his home with everything bright he could get his hands on. The pace is good in the story so that I didn’t get bored, and there isn’t a lot of monologue which I was sincerely happy about.
The author did a great job with making Lazlo and Roman distinct characters and maintaining their voices throughout. At first, I didn’t like Lazlo. He was a forceful and opinionated character who came on strongly to Roman when he meets him, and didn’t take no for an answer. I had to keep reminding myself that this was a fantasy book, in a fantasy world, and Lazlo was a dragon. Therefore, don’t measure him to a human’s personality and what is acceptable or not. But as the story progresses, Lazlo stops thinking of Roman as something to collect and keep, but falls in love with him, and Lazlo’s protective and gentle side comes out. It was funny how Lazlo had to keep reminding himself to speak in human terms, like bed instead of nest, and how it was simpler in the old days to just kidnap someone.
Roman is very insecure and cautious. He’s not the type to spend his heat with Alpha males so the idea of sharing it with Lazlo is scary, but feels right at the same time. There is a misunderstanding, as a breakup catalyst, but it’s deliberately caused by someone in the household. And I’m glad it didn’t go on forever because I’m not a fan of long drawn out misunderstandings.
Holden, Roman’s friend, appears to be the star of the next book, as is Lazlo’s friend, Kymar, which I’m looking forward to reading.
The Christmas Dragon’s Mate was cute, fluffy, humorous and a had castle full of holiday feelings. I very much enjoyed this book and will read the next book in the series. I give this story 4 Stars.
