(actually, all of Phoebe Wahl's books are absolutely fabulous) In this book a father and son lose their rental home to a developer. I love how the dad handles the situation and allows his son to feel his feelings, sad, mad, and creates an outlet for him (shredding/dancing/singing/painting). He also expresses that he is feeling sad and mad about it as well. He also allows his son time to deal with his feelings, and gives him space to grow into the new house. Wonderful book, beautiful illustrations, I can't recommend this book enough. Leo and his Dad share lovely memories during their time in "The Blue House." As new construction goes up around the blue house, Leo's Dad shares the devastating news that their house will be torn down and they will be moving. The readers follow Leo through his journey, as he learns ways to process his deep emotions and turn his new house into a home. Leo has lived in the old blue house with his dad since he can remember. One day, his dad delivered the news that they would have to move because the landlord has sold the house and it was going to be torn down. Leo did not want to move. Will he ever feel at home anywhere else? This book is recommended for children ages 3-8 who are dealing with change in their world. The endpapers tell the story even before you read the book. The Illustrations are beautiful and move right along with the story. Long-haired Leo lives with his dad in a small blue house. It isn't perfect, but it's home, and they love it - so when Leo's dad tells him that the landlord has sold the house and they'll have to leave, Leo is angry. "I'm angry too," his dad empathizes, and together they figure out how to be less mad and sad (dance party, painting on the walls). In their new house, Leo has an idea: they paint a picture of their old blue house on Leo's new bedroom wall, so it will stay with them. A beautiful, necessary book that will help kids through a common, often traumatic experience over which they have little control. Leo's strong bond with his dad, and the way his dad validates his feelings, helps them both. Illustrations are in watercolor, gouache, collage, and colored pencil. Square trim.
