"What happens when we let the living God into our practical lives? Everyone is looking for deeper meaning in their lives and for personal peace as well as peace for all. But are we ready for what can happen when we invite the living God to rule our personal lives and transform us and our society? Where religion, self-help, and the political ideologies of left and right have failed us, God enters with power to break the grip of money, violence, and tribalism and bring about a new life of justice and fellowship. This book is not for those who look to spirituality as an escape from reality. But for those who hunger for change that is genuine and tangible, for a personal peace of heart that is inseparable from justice and peace between nations, Arnold's words will be a rousing encouragement to expect more than you ever dared hope. Experiencing God is the third volume in Inner Land: A Guide into the Heart of the Gospel"--… (meer)

This is not an easy book to read. German theory is maybe too heavy for the 21st century American reader. This is the third volume of series of 5 called Inner Land. The practice of having biblical notes in the margin of every page is also off-putting. The author is from the Anabaptist tradition, The book was published in German initially in 1918 and the Bruderhof Community was founded in 1920. The American English translation was one in 1975 revised in 2000.

But there were quite a few insightful paragraphs that I was induced to underline.
1. With Christ we too rise to new life. In Persian Mysticism those who become sacrifices to the passion of love destroy there lives forever. (p18)
2. The life-creating spirit blows where he wills. He comes as he wills. He knows where he wants to go. (p19).
3. We need constant spiritual renewal. p30-1
a. We are born again through the living word of God and the blowing spirit of Jesus of Jesus Christ.
b. The spirit of life judges the thoughts and motives of our hearts; he want to sever soul from spirit moment by moment so that we do not become subject to our emotional nature and unable to perceive the living Spirit.
c. The spirit of truth is always ready to fill as anew and unite us in his church.
4. Every experience of God is an undeserved gift. p32
5a. God's heart is revealed in Jesus. p36
5b. Jesus cannot be dissected. p38
5c. The experience of God gives strength. p41
6. The experience go God is love -- love that overcomes everything that withstands it. p44
7. Under his rulership, justice and peace kiss each other. p48, Ps. 85:10
8. The Church of Jesus Christ is the body of the community of perfect peace, through which life and immortality are revealed in our time. As the bearer of the kingdom of peace, the church is freed from all killing and murdering. p88
9. In the church of the Holy Spirit, the future kingdom of God is present with its perfect justice, its absolute peace, and its joy in love and unity. p.90
10. Quotes from the early fathers: Justin Martyr, Theophilus of Antioch, Origen of Alexandria, Tertullian, Athenagoras of Athens, the Sibylline Oracles, Apostolic Tradition, the Shepherd of Hermas, Augustine of Hippo. p92-100
11. Medieval Mystics: Hildebert of Lavarin, Meister Eckhart p102-07
12. Reformers: Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi, Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, Gerhard Tersteegen, Francois De Salignan de la Motte-Fenelon, August Hermann Francke, Martin Luther, p99-106. ( )

This is the 3rd book in Author Arnold's Inner Land series. In this volume he focuses on describing God and explaining Him to others. It combines theology and mysticism in a brief, but deep book.

It is well worth returning to this volume as I think each reading will give deeper insights to Author Arnold's ideas. ( )

While this book was well written, it was not what I was expecting. I originally thought it would be something tied in with Blackaby's"Experiencing God," but it was not. It was actually written with a view to more communal living and portrays a much more "liberal" theology than what I believe to be correct, biblical theology. ( )

I received this book as part of the LibraryThing early review program.

I find most modern Christian books incredibly lacking in substance and a lt of feel good fluff. However, I was very excited to get it, the subject sounded fantastic, and although it is a new 2020 release the original work was written over 100 years ago.

However, I was disappointed. This very short book took me months to get through. I was written in a very odd style. To the point that I think it may have been originally written in some sort of poetic verse when authored in German that didn't translate well to English. ( )

This book was a little bit over my head due to it being theology based. I kept looking for a personal connection and I never got that. It was hard to stay focused or interested in the book. It wasn't the type of book I would normally read in relation to God and religion. I think maybe I should have read the previous volumes and maybe I could of got a better understanding of where the author was coming from. There is a lot of scripture reference in the margins that can be helpful. Overall if you are looking for theology about God, then this book will definitely be for you. ( )
