Titus (read 9 Apr 1989) This is a book in the "Twayne U.S.A. Authors Series." It is a 1963 book on Churchill, born Nov 10, 1871, in St. Louis, Mo., died Mar 12, 1947, in Winter Park, Fla. I have long heard of him, but have never read any book by him. So I did not expect to actually read the book--but I found it read so smoothly, and was so interesting that I couldn't put it down till I had read every word. It does appear that it would not be worthwhile to read any of his books, though some still are on library shelves, I think. He published his first novel in 1898 and five of his books were no. 1 best sellers between 1899 and 1915. His literary reputation is now--or at least this 1963 book says--zero. If one were to read anything maybe Richard Carvel, a 1899 book which is solidly researched and is based on pre- and Revolutionary days might be worth reading. The Crossing (1904) and The Crisis (1901) are his other two historical novels. He in late years got nutty ideas on religion and never published a novel after 1918, though his novels were reprinted after that. The reason Winston S. Churchill used his middle initial was to avoid being confused with the author--the similarity in name is probably Winston Churchill the author's greatest reason for still being remembered.
