Ex-chief Inspector Swift arrives at Major Heathcliff Lennox's home to inform him that the ex-fiance, Charles Lambton, of his girlfriend Persephone Carruthers is in jail in Damascus. He has been accused of the attempted murder of American actress Josephine Belvoir. And that Persi needs their help. Another entertaining and well-written historical mystery with its loveable characters. A very good addition to the series farce, friendship, false-information, situational-humor, British-humor, verbal-humor, Damascus, amateur-sleuth, archaeologist, artifact, murder, murder-investigation, ex-cop, dog, movies, spies, gendarmes Damascus of 1921. Lennox (ex-WW1 war pilot), his butler Greggs, and his friend ex-Chief Inspector Swift get guilted into going to Damascus at the behest of Lennox's dear friend (Persi Carruthers, the archaeologist) . By aeroplane. With Mr. Fogg, his small dog. Great fun and with a plot! There's also making movies, spies, gendarmes, and even a sheik. LOVED IT! Voice actor Sam Dewhurst-Phillips really brings it all over the top with his droll way of interpreting the text. Perfect match! Much better than the 3rd one in this series. Still, Menuhin lacks subtlety. I wonder if she were to put it aside for a year and then rewrite if her books would improve. Having dissed the book, I must say that the visit to the 20s movie making was interesting. I just wish she would think about the end denouement and build it into the story earlier. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

"There's a damsel in distress and accusations of attempted murder flying around, but it's not in the comfortable confines of the English countryside, it's in the very distant city of Damascus. Lennox must go and investigate, although he's not too keen on exotic locations, and his old retainer, Greggs is distinctly averse to the very idea. Nevertheless, ex-Chief Inspector Swift persuades them and they reach the ancient city to discover a movie crew, a spy and a couple of mysterious ladies. Nobody seems to be telling the truth, they all have secrets, and there's one secret in particular that's drawn them like bees to the honeypot. But what is it? And then there's murder, and mysteries from the ancient past, and a handsome Sheik who remains in the shadows. Heathcliff Lennox and Swift must investigate and use all their ingenuity to unravel the enigma that lies hidden deep below the dusty streets of ancient Damascus."--Provided by publisher. This was a mildly entertaining mash-up of a cozy murder mystery and an international, post ww1 espionage plot, with an added sidebar of treasure hunt. On a silent movie set. I enjoyed the recurring characters, especially everyone’s favorite doggy film star, Mr. Fogg. ( )
