The book has a cover by Gervasio Gellardo, who did the ones for Ballantine's Dunsany collections. Its listed copyright date of publication is 2008!
And it includes a new introduction by "Lin Carter!" :D (Ha!)
In Lin's introductory remarks, he states that this is the very last book to be published in Ballantine's Adult Fantasy series under the Sign of the Unicorn and, by the way, not only did the series die too soon--so did he.
In Heaven, following a chat and sharing a smoke with Lord Dunsany (during which the 18th Baron of Dunsany thanked Lin for "resurrecting" his work but opined, "It was a shame you put so many introductions in my books that you didn't have room to put in the rest of my fantasy tales"), Lin felt immensely guilty. Therefore:
"I made my way through the Land of Dream, past the City of Never, up through the gates of Deeper Slumber and into Go-By Street in London, from whence I journeyed back to the offices of Ballantine Books."
There, "after a bit of spectral dramatization straight from 'The Christmas Carol,' the publishers assented to let him put together this final collection. 🙂
All the stories included in the book have been previously published, I believe, and are available in reissued editions of recent years (and are available for free via Gutenberg Project downloads), but this oddity is a fun item for Dunsany and BB Adult Fantasy Series collectors. The introduction by "Lin" is a hoot. ( )
