This story not only makes me think fondly of the relationship between a father and daughter, but it also reminds me of the desire parents have to protect their children. Although the king tricked many people, he was doing what he felt was necessary to ensure his daughter found a worthy suitor. As a parent I know my children will endure many situations I will wish I could prevent them from, but I also know they must face difficult decisions to build their self confidence and understanding of consequences.
In the classroom, I would ask the students to share things that they would want to shelter, or protect those they care about from. We could also draw and design our own imaginary monsters using craft supplies. ( )
