This documentary will increase your awareness of the revolutionary nature of true Christianity unlike the false Christianities that have been proliferated in the world, corrupted by militarism in the name of God and theologies corrupted by the penal substitutionary theory of atonement, absent from the Scriptures and from the first millenium of Christian teaching. The penal substitutionary theory of atonement presents a false image of God. This false theology of a god who claims to be loving while at the same time petty and punitive, demanding tit for tat, lends itself to "legitimize" militarism in the name of Christ, resulting not only in a false god, but a false christ, and a false gospel. Unfortunately, many of us in the West are so bombarded by the doctrines of such long-perverted forms of Christianity that we actually think these views are "Biblical," "Christian," or "Orthodox." Furthermore, we are in varying degrees desensitized to violence. Movements of violence both in word and deed are on the rise in the Name of Christ in the United States. The video reveals sources of this error and how to respond to it in ways that are worthy of Christ and the Gospel He brought. One of the flaws I saw in the film was its discussion of the christianization of the Roman Empire and the politicization of Christianity, beginning with Constantine, without mentioning the concurrent, counter movement at that time by many Christians who fled "violence and strife in the city" and went out into the desert to live a monastic life. I attribute this blindspot to Westernized forms of Christianity, which often have lost sight of the value of the spiritual calling of monastics. Eastern Christians have never lost an appreciation and awareness of the benefits of monasticism. The effect of monastic movements was to preserve an authentic Christianity with Christocentric values and so provide spiritual "streams in the desert" to those who would drink from its wells. Through monasticism Christ continually provides His Church true renewal through what might be called the New-Testament version of the Old-Testament "sons of the prophets." The video, while promoting non-violent resistance, does not encourage anarchy, but rather a way of life in submission to the true teachings of Christ in the Holy Gospels and in cooperation with the Holy Spirit.
